National Observatory of Athens expands its cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA)

The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are expanding their strategic partnership, taking another major step towards the future of space technologies.
At the core of this new agreement is the development and operation of a new Optical Ground Station (OGS), which will significantly upgrade the country’s advanced communications infrastructure.
What does this mean for research and technology?
• Laser Optical Communications: Transitioning from traditional radio frequencies to laser beams, enabling ultra-high-speed data transfer to and from space.
• Quantum Security (QKD): Supporting Quantum Key Distribution applications, laying the groundwork for ultra-secure, European-standard telecommunication infrastructures.
• International Leadership: Reinforcing Greece’s position as a vital research and operational hub within the European space technology ecosystem.
This milestone highlights the expertise and scientific excellence of NOA’s researchers, firmly establishing the Observatory at the forefront of space telecommunications!
