Renovation and restoration of the historic Newall telescope

On 21 September 2013 at the premises of the National Observatory of Athens a beautiful inaugural ceremony took place so as to commemorate the renovation and complete restoration of the historic NEWALL telescope, which resumed service after many years at the Visitors Center in Penteli.

deltio typou newall IMG 6470 smallThe aim of the event was to highlight the importance and contribution of the Newall telescope to the development of astronomy in Greece, and deliver a scientific instrument through which all people will be able to enjoy the magic of astronomy. The popularization of astronomy and its contribution to education is a basic activity of the National Observatory of Athens. Thus, NOA aims at embracing this renewed infrastructure not only from the educational point of view but the social as well.

deltio typou IMG 6412 smallThe event was welcomed by Prof. Kanaris Tsinganos, Chairman of the Board of the NOA, Dr. Christos Vasilakos, General Secretary for Research and Technology, the Metropolitan Mesogaia and Lavrion, Mr. Nicholas, Academician, Professor George Contopoulos, Supervisor, Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens, Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens, Mr. Paul Laskaridis , Academician, Prof. Christos Zerefos, Supervisor, Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology, Academy of Athens and Mr. Nikos Matsopoulos, Astronomer of NOA, manager of the Visitors Centre.

The General Secretary for Research and Technology, staff from the GSRT, academics, university professors, local authorities, sponsors of the event by OTE Academy, officers of the Managing Authority of the Ministry of Development and the Attica region, members of NOA and many distinguished guests attended the whole event.
